Antique Christofle

----------

The young Charles Christofle grew up in a modest jewelery workshop in the Marais district of Paris. He took over the reins as early as 1830, and under his leadership the small business grew steadily. With the financial support of his wealthy sister (Mme. Rosine Bouilhet-Christofle) he had the means to realize his plans, but the real breakthrough came in 1842, when Charles obtained an exclusive patent license for the electroplating process from the brothers Elkington from England. Since then, the Christofle name has been synonymous with a long history of the very best that France has to offer. In the 19th century, the firm received orders from heads of state such as Napoleon III, the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and the Emperor of Mexico. All pieces presented on this page date roughly from the first 100 years of Christofle's existence, from 1930-1935, the year in which the company changed its name from Christofle & Cie to Orfevrerie Christofle.

In 1850, Charles Halphen founded his jeweler's workshop in Paris. The "Alfenide metal" - its name clearly a play on the name of the founder- was used as the base for the silver-plated items of this factory. This was an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc, which was perfect as a base metal due to its silvery shine, in contrast to the brass and copper that was still common until then (which has a yellow-red colour).

The Parisian jeweler and silverware manufacturer - Christofle - enters into a collaboration with Halphen, in which Christofle makes the designs, Halphen creates the pieces from her Alfenide, and these are then silver plated by Christofle and marketed under the name Alfenide. This gave Christofle the opportunity to address a broader market segment, and provided Halphen with bread.

After Halphen's death, his widow took over. In 1888, Christofle finally took over the factory and continued to produce cutlery under the Alfenide line until around the Second World War. Although it is not very well known, these parts are inextricably linked to the name Christofle. With its beautiful designs and excellent quality, Alfenide remains a quality mark for luxury table settings. The pieces are no longer made these days.

In 1872, Otto Leonard Wiskemann - a descendant of a German family with a long history in silversmithing - started a workshop in the Rue des Longs Chariots in Brussels. In the years before he had worked as an apprentice in Paris, where he learned the necessary tricks of the trade. He had also witnessed the introduction of electroplating to continental Europe by Charles Christofle, who had bought the pattents from England. Thanks to this experience and knowledge, Otto was able to start a company in the 1870s that would later become the best-known silversmith in Belgium and a figurehead of quality. The company experienced its heyday between the two World Wars, and eventually went under in the 1970s; the close of a century of history in Belgian silversmithing.

Jan Eisenloeffel (1876-1957) was a leading Dutch designer. Eisenloeffel was a widely talented character; besides being a designer, he was also a silversmith, designer of interiors, ceramics and jewels, a stained glass artist, enameller, drawer and designer of book bindings.

In his younger years, Eisenloeffel travelled to Russia to study collections in museums in Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as gaining experience in large production processes. Initially, he was to become an apprentice of the famous Peter Carl Fabergé, but this was cut short when Eisenloeffel, on his first visit, remarked that he found the golden decorative designs of Fabergé "suikerbakkerswerk" (a Dutch pejorative term denoting work found excessive and too fancy). This opinion ended his apprenticeship before it had even begun. Eisenloeffel was shocked by the enormous gap between social classes in Tsarist Russia, but this also strenghtened him in the belief that well-designed products should be accesible to all, regardless of status or wealth.

His cutlery design "700" for Gero is well-known. This pattern was one of the most exclusive patterns produced by Gero.

Georg Nilsson was a Danish designer of silverware, known above all for his work for the Dutch Gero company. Tutored by Georg Jensen in Copenhagen, he was appointed the designer for the Danish Gero Factory in the 1920's. The pieces produced were for the Danish market and very distinctive in their design. After the crash of 1929 the Danish Gero branch was forced to scale down and eventually transferred its operations in 1933 to Zeist, Netherlands.

Nilsson moved as well and continued designing for the company. Nilsson designed many of Gero's most well-known and acclaimed flatware patterns, and pieces with his signature [GN] stamp - although not exactly rare - are nonetheless cherished by collectors.
